Building physics

This specialised division carries out research projects, performs tests and delivers expert opinions on questions pertaining to building physics. By providing a link between practical solutions centred on timber construction and current questions of building physics, designers, builders and contractors are supplied with optimal support for the realisation of timber construction projects.

Research and development

Fire protection

The focus lies on the investigation and optimisation of building components and connections in timber construction. At present preliminary research into gaps in connections between wall and roof components (Research project) and investigations into the fire resistance of timber construction elements (Research project) are carried out. The project aims to develop an assessment and simulation tool for the fire resistance of timber construction elements. Results are to be incorporated into national and European standardisations via the ERA-NET initiative of the wood-wisdom program.

Sound insulation

Research activities focus on the optimisation of timber construction elements with respect to their sound insulation properties and with respect to component connections. At present the sound insulation properties of solid timber floors and their support are being investigated.  This project also aims to develop a predictive model based on the measured data.


Thermal insulation and moisture proofing




Currently investigations are under way concerning the hygrothermal properties of building components in low pitched wooden roof structures, in windows (research project) and in component connections (foundation-window connections). The investigations aim to develop practical solutions for designers and contractors and to improve and validate models for simulations.

Testing and inspections

In the area of building physics the scope of the accreditation covers 23 testing and inspection procedures. An overview of the services is provided below:

    Calculation and optimisation of thermal bridges
    Steady state 2-dimensional modelling of water vapour diffusion
    Dynamic 2-dimensional simultaneous simulation of thermal and hygrothermal transmission
    Risk assessment for formation of condensate and mould
  • Assessment tools pertaining to energy efficiency
    Fan pressurization method: determination of air permeability using a laboratory test facility

Additional services

Expert’s report

In this specialist division of building physics, expert’s reports on properties pertaining to building physics of building components and connections are prepared. This is achieved by an assessment of the facts combined with on-site measurements and/or laboratory tests, as well as with calculations using simulation models.
