Industrial Competence Centre “Wood Technology"

The Industrial Competence Centre “Wood Technology” (Kind) located at HFA was established in 2002 with funding from the “Industrial competence centres and network” program of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Economy, Family and Youth (BMWFJ). An extension was granted for a three year period from 2006 to 2008. In 2008 all projects within the competence centre were concluded. Topics researched within the competence centre focused on the utilization of wood as a material. Results will contribute to an increase in innovation within the Austrian wood industry. The broad spectrum of topics addressed is indicative of the aim pursued by Holzforschung Austria together with the entire Austrian wood industry to develop innovative solutions for trend-setting production processes and safe products with great benefit to the customer.

 

Funding and project partners:

The project volume for the years 2006 to 2008 was € 2.22 Mio. Project  funding was provided by BMWFJ (28,4%), the Assocication of the Austrian Wood Industry (14,9%), ÖBf AG (2,8%) and 40 project-specific contribution from companies (34,6%).

The research budget for the seven year period is approximately 5,1 Mio. Europs. Project financing is provides by the federal Ministry of Economy, Family and youth, the Association of the Austrian Wood Industries, individual companies partnering in specific project. the Ausstrian Federal Forests (ÖBf) and bx the Austrian Society for Wood research. Due to the very significant status of the wood sector within the Austrian economy the invest research funds provide a high leverage.

Online Quality Control for glued structural products: Development of a complete system for contact-free, process integrated online quality control for all quality and strength-related production parameters for the just-in-time manufacturing of glued structural products. Wood-glass-composite elements in structural glazing: Wood-glass-composite elements in structural glazing are to be manufactured and advanced in order to make use of load-bearing adhesive joints between wood and glass in timber construction (Project leader: Dipl.-HTL-Ing. K. P. Schober)
Mixed timber-RC/steel design for urban construction: Monitoring of thermal, acoustic and fire performance parameters in buildings designed using mixed timber-RC/steel design; research into the applicability of laboratory parameters and of fault tolerances and into areas to improve design and construction (Project leader: Dr. M. Teibinger)
Brightwood: Development of light-coloured and transparent coatings for wood in exterior applications, implementation of new concepts regarding UV- and moisture-protection considering also new approach from nano-technology (Project leader: Dr. G. Grüll)
Processing and weatherability of WPC-products: Research and development of joining methods for Wood-Plastic Composites (WPCs) and investigation of weatherability during long-term exposure to natural weathering (Project leader: : DI G. Oberdorfer)
Improving the efficiency in the pelletizing process: Development of the fundamentals for the technical and economic optimization as well as for the automation of the pelletizing process while maintaining a high quality for wood pellets (Project leader: Dr. M. Golser)
