The specialized division of fasteners deals with the development, approval and testing as well as the inspection of connections between wood components and between wood and steel components. Also adhesive joints are increasingly gaining importance.
Fasteners and jointing techniques are of immense importance for both new buildings as well as for rehabilitation of existing defective or heavy-duty load-bearing timber constructions. Starting points for research projects are the evaluation and development of adhesive joints (wood-wood, wood-steel) as well as of mechanical fasteners for on-site renovation and for repairing the damage in solid wood elements or glued laminated timber in situ. This makes necessary the development of new adhesive systems, since the existing renovation procedure is very laborious and bears dangers by means of heat generation for the personnel carrying out the bonding operation.
Traditionally developed fasteners and connecting techniques are employed for the anchoring of buildings (e.g. prefabricated houses, sport halls..).. The suitability of these fasteners should be checked, optimised and further developed with new approaches.
