In white water circuits of paper machines microbial growth along with suspended solids can lead to deposits (biofilms). Parts of these deposits detach spontaneously, causing holes in the paper web and breaks. These interruptions lead to costly down-time for the machine and problems in quality of the product. The so far use of biocides is expensive and not in the sense of modern ecological management.

The aim of the project is to find biocide free coatings for paper machines, which suppress the formation of biofilms. For the investigation variously coated test plates are placed in the paper machines and examined for biofilm development by molecular techniques and electron microscopy. A selection procedure will lead to the most suitable coatings.
