Crackless Wood

Cracking is one of the main reasons for degradation of exterior wood coatings. Without proper maintenance, these cracks lead to complete coating failure. The project “Crackless Wood” aims at the development of crack-free wood coatings. Cracking is, however, a complex phenomenon that involves multiple interactions between wood and coating as well as the wood/coating interface. In order to achieve crack-free wood coatings, numerical modelling techniques based on the finite element method (FEM) are used. This technique allows modelling the interaction between multiple physics.
