The development of a simple, non-destructive, and mostly contact-free method for strength grading of round timber and green sawn timber is central to this research project. Optical vibration measurement via interferometry is the method of choice. The feasibility of this measurement method is indicated by the correlations obtained: good correlations between the dynamic Young’s-Moduli of the sampled round timber and the dynamic Young’s-Moduli of the sawn timber cut from these logs and good correlations between the dynamic Young’s-Moduli of green sawn timber and the dynamic Young’s-Moduli of the sawn timber after drying.
